FTTH Access: True Broadband, the Future Mainstream
Release time: 2023-04-13    2063 Views

At present, there are three main access methods in the world: xDSL, Cable Modem and fiber optic access (FTTx), all of which are fixed wired access technologies. xDSL technology is still the leading broadband access technology in the world, occupying an absolute large market share. However, due to the limitation of bandwidth, the growth has slowed down, and the number of users has even decreased in Japan; Cable Modem has developed the best in North America, and has surpassed the number of DSL users; Become the ultimate solution for broadband access. Norda Consulting's "2008 FTTH (Fiber to the Home) Industry Development and Market Opportunity Research Report" believes that FTTH has obvious advantages in bandwidth and technology compared with xDSL and Cable Modem. In the case that social development requires higher and higher Internet bandwidth, only FTTH can meet this demand. Therefore, in the future broadband era, FTTH will be the master of access methods.

It can be seen from the comparison of the three technologies that the huge bandwidth of optical fiber makes FTTH an inevitable direction for the future development of user access networks and the best solution for broadband access. The existing broadband access technology, whether it is ADXL or access from cable TV network or power network, has very limited bandwidth. In these technologies, the egress bandwidth is always the bottleneck because users share the bandwidth. Therefore, FTTH will be an inevitable trend in the development of broadband access. Although the current FTTH access cost is much higher than that of the other two types, with the continuous expansion of the industry scale and the realization of large-scale promotion, the cost of a single user will soon drop.

The following characteristics of FTTH determine its advantages in broadband access technology:

1. FTTH moves the ONU (optical network unit) to the user's home, which is an all-fiber network;

2. Provide ultra-high bandwidth: FTTH can provide users with unlimited bandwidth in theory. As far as the current mature technology is concerned, it can provide users with any bandwidth within the range of 0~1G;

3. The access network is fully transparent, thus enhancing the transparency of the network to data formats, rates, wavelengths and protocols;

4. The requirements for environmental conditions and power supply have been relaxed;

5. Simplified maintenance and installation.

FTTH is also a feasible solution to realize triple play integration. It will create an equal and open competitive environment, avoid the problems of multi-network overlap and waste of resources in the current network construction, and contribute to the virtuous circle of the broadband market and the development of broadband services. At the same time, FTTH, as a broadband access method in a broad sense, can adapt to various access requirements of different users in different periods, and realize a low-cost and flexible networking solution.
